The Reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi as Emir of Kano State

In 2014, Sanusi succeeded Ado Bayero as the 14th Emir of Kano. However, he was dethroned in 2020 by the Kano state government for “insubordination”. Nonetheless, he was replaced by his predecessor’s son, Aminu Ado Bayero. The government then created five new emirates in the state and appointed Aminu Ado Bayero as the new emir in Kano. However, Governor Yusuf reinstated Sanusi to the throne. This caused mixed reactions among the residents of Kano.

Protests and Public Unrest

The reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi as the Emir of Kano has led to protests and public unrest in Kano. Demonstrators are demanding the removal of Muhammadu Sanusi. And also, the reinstatement of Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano. The situation remains tense as conflicting opinions on the matter continue to fuel public unrest.

The protesters are calling for Sanusi’s removal and the reinstatement of Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano. The dissolution of the emirates and the restoration of Kano Emirate to its pre-2019 status by Governor Abba Yusuf has reignited tension in the city.

Divergent Views on Muhammadu Sanusi

Prominent figures such as Peter Obi and Abubakar Sadeeq have voiced contrasting perspectives on the issue. Moreover, this further contributes to the division within the community. While Peter Obi emphasizes the negative impact of Sanusi’s removal on Nigeria. Abubakar Sadeeq dismisses the protests as orchestrated events by enemies of the state and emirate.

Amidst the dissent, voices like Yaya Abba express the sentiment that the people of Kano are demanding the removal of the “illegitimate King” and the restoration of the rightful owner of the throne, Aminu Ado Bayero. This call reflects the deep-seated desire for a resolution that aligns with the will of the people.

Continued Support for Emir Sanusi

Despite the ongoing turmoil, His Highness the Emir of Kano, Khalipha Muhammadu Sanusi II, has appointed Hajiya A’in Jafaru Fagge as Jakadiyar Sarkin Kano. Additionally, dignitaries continue to pay homage to the Emir at his Palace. This reaffirmed their loyalty and support amidst the challenging circumstances.
